Ambassador Christian Meuwly

Graduated in political science from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1989, he joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs where he was appointed Deputy-Head of Information in 1992. In 1995, he was posted to the Swiss Permanent Mission to the European Communities in Brussels, where he dealt with political affairs and communication. In 1999, he returned to Bern, with the rank of Minister, as Deputy-Head of Political Affairs Division I (Europe and the former USSR). From 2002 until 2007, he was Deputy-Head of Mission in Paris. As Head of Political Affairs Division I with the rank of Ambassador since March 2007, his responsibilities covered bilateral relations with European and Central Asian countries as well as Swiss participation to the OSCE and the Council of Europe. In 2011 the Swiss Federal Council has appointed him Ambassador of Switzerland to South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia and Swaziland, with residence in Pretoria. He presented his letter of credence to President Zuma on 1 February 2012.
