The Impact of our Apprenticeships

SSACI bridges the gap between education and employment through internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. This provides young people with critical workplace experience, enhancing their employability.

  • Centres of Specialisation (CoS) Initiative: In conjunction with DHET; TVET colleges; Treasury and the National Skills Fund; SETAs; QCTO; Employers and Employer associations, SSACI managed the establishment of 26 Centres of specialisation in 13 trades; across 19 TVET colleges - training the first cohort of 780 artisans through dual-track learning. This initiative relied on college industry partnerships influenced by SSACI’s earlier iterations of dual-track learning.
  • HW Seta Apprenticeship Programme: Developed an apprenticeship training model of integrating knowledge; practical training; workplace experience and work readiness training. Six hundred beneficiaries completed the programmes with a 95% throughput rate and 70% employment.
  • AVI Project: Implemented an artisan training programme funded solely by corporate sponsors, for their pipeline, with the potential of 100% employment. This model has the potential to expand to other corporates and sectors.
  • Managing internship for 65 youth at Swissport: through recruitment and selection of TVET graduates, in the air logistics environment. Encouraged the inclusion of females in cargo handling.
The Impact of our Systemic Research

SSACI’s data-driven approach, grounded in action research and global best practices, has significantly influenced skills development policies. We have published key guidelines to enhance collaboration between companies, educational institutions, and stakeholders. Typical studies include:

  • TVET college curriculum relevance and responsiveness
  • Situational analysis of entrepreneurship development in TVET colleges
  • Skills gaps in South Africa
  • Situational analysis of skills needs around mining communities
  • Business case for the establishment of the South African Institute of Vocational and Continuous Education and Training (SAIVCET)
