SSACI Cares: Preparing South Africa for the Future of TVET Education

At SSACI (Swiss–South African Cooperation Initiative), we are passionate about empowering young South Africans through skills that matter — skills that lead to real jobs and meaningful careers.

That’s why we want to keep you informed about one of the most important changes happening in the TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) system — the transition from legacy qualifications to the new Occupational Certificates (OCs).

 What’s Changing?

This shift is not just an update — it’s a transformation.

Occupational Certificates are designed to:

  • Equip learners with practical, workplace-ready skills
  • Involve real-world learning through industry placements
  • Improve employability and career readiness
  • Align education with industry and economic needs

The Transition Timeline

The QCTO officially replaced legacy qualifications on 30 June 2023, with a transition period allowing learners to complete their current studies. By 2026, all TVET institutions will fully move to the Occupational Certificate system.

SSACI’s Commitment

At SSACI, we understand that change can be confusing — especially for students, parents, and training providers.
That’s why we are committed to guiding and informing the public every step of the way.

We believe this new system will:

  • Produce better-trained, employable graduates
  • Strengthen partnerships between colleges and employers
  • Build a skilled workforce ready for South Africa’s future
